Programme Overview

Spain's Golden Visa granted residency to non-EU investors placing €500,000 or more into Spanish real estate, with wider Schengen access and no minimum stay requirement. The programme closed to new applications on 3 April 2025; existing holders keep their permits and renewal rights. Investors targeting Spain today typically use the Non-Lucrative Visa, the Entrepreneur (Ley 14/2013) route or the Digital Nomad Visa, and we advise on each alongside comparable EU options in Portugal, Greece and Italy.

Taxation

Spanish tax residency arises after 183 days in a calendar year, bringing worldwide income into scope at progressive rates of roughly 19% to 47%, plus regional wealth tax and the state solidarity tax on large fortunes. Non-residents are taxed only on Spanish-source income. Qualifying inbound workers and digital nomads can elect the special regime (the "Beckham law") for a 24% flat rate on Spanish employment income up to €600,000 for up to six years.

Residency Requirements

The former Golden Visa had no minimum stay beyond one visit per renewal period. Current routes such as the Non-Lucrative and Digital Nomad visas require you to spend more than 183 days per year in Spain, which normally triggers Spanish tax residency.

Path to Citizenship

Spanish citizenship is available after 10 years of continuous legal residency (2 years for nationals of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal and Sephardic Jews). Requires CCSE civics and DELE A2 language exams. Spain generally does not permit dual citizenship except for those preferential nationalities.
